Real Madrid’s hot start to the season continued on Saturday at the Bernabeu, where goals from Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo were enough to defeat Real Betis.
The team led by Carlo Ancelotti is currently atop the league standings after winning all four of its games this year.
Vinicius Jr. improves his game by consistently scoring
Despite the fact that Vinicius Junior made a dramatic improvement last season and ended it by scoring the game-winning goal in the Champions League final, he was never able to score in three straight contests.
In fact, prior to this recent run of goals against Celta Vigo, Espanyol, and now Real Betis on consecutive weekends, he hadn’t done so as a Real Madrid player; the previous time was when he was a teenager for Flamengo.
The effort on Saturday was a special goal as well—exactly the kind of accomplishment that previously seemed impossible for him. He timed his run to David Alaba’s pass behind the defense, and at just the right time, calmly lifted the ball over Rui Silva in the Betis goal. It wasn’t all perfect, though; he missed a great opportunity to put Madrid back in front shortly after Betis had tied the score.
Only Karim Benzema and Iago Aspas scored more goals in LaLiga last season than Vinicius’ 17 league goals, so if he can top that total this year, it will be bad news for everyone else.
