A Detroit radio host was viciously murdered, and his family was severely attacked by a house guest after he was invited by the family. The house guest tried to kill himself after he committed the heinous act.
WWJ 950 overnight anchor Jim Matthews was with his girlfriend and 2 children in their Detroit-area condo around noon when they allegedly invited one of their neighbors into their house. Neighbors had seen the man with Matthews’ girlfriend in the past.
Nobody can say exactly what went down in the house, but Matthew’s girlfriend and his 5-year-old daughter made it out of the condo alive and flagged down someone driving by.
The driver then called 911 and the Chesterfield township officers quickly responded, forcing their way into the house. His 10-year-old boy was discovered bound and beaten inside a closet.
The police searched the whole house and police found the suspect in the basement, while he was overdosing on heroin after sustaining self-inflicted wounds. Matthew’s girlfriend was stabbed severally and his daughter was also injured.
The Detroit radio host’s girlfriend and son are in critical condition while his daughter is in stable condition. The WWJ Newsradio 950 issued a statement, saying:
“There have been many tears shed in our newsroom today and Jim will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jim’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
Chesterfield Township Police Chief Brian Bassett said:
“Our investigation has determined this is an isolated tragedy that does not present a danger to our community at this time.”
