Andy Murray’s US Open Match Against Matteo Berrettini Suspended Due To ‘Medical Emergency’

The third-round match between Andy Murray and Matteo Berrettini at the US Open was briefly interrupted because a spectator needed emergency medical care. With Berrettini attempting to break and advance one round closer to the fourth, Murray was down 30-40 on serve.

However, there was some commotion in the crowd as Murray prepared to serve, and the umpire appeared to be oblivious to what was going on there. Before he realized someone in the crowd needed medical attention, he first asked the people to be quiet.

Jim Courier said on commentary: “There’s a bit of a disturbance in the crowd. “There’s a person in distress. They need some medical help. That’s gonna stop play here for a moment until they can get to this person.”

Then, as more onlookers gathered around the action, the cameras panned to the crowd. Only a short while later, the game was resumed to raucous applause inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The sick person received loud applause because they were standing up again, which was a positive sign.

“Good news, the person in question who was struggling is up on their feet,” he said. “They’re being assisted into a wheelchair so we should be getting back underway here.”

Both players returned to the court and were prepared to resume play, but they had to wait a little longer because some spectators took too long to return to their seats. When Berrettini attempted to break serve, Murray regained control of the match at that crucial juncture.

The No. 13 seed, however, blew his chance when he sent a backhand return rather than holding serve and winning the following two points to stay in the game. But throughout the match, Berrettini struggled against Murray on his serve, and the pattern continued in the following game.

The Italian held for a love-service game, putting Murray under immediate pressure once more. But the former British No. 1 persevered to avoid a third break point and win the set.
