Mexico just got struck by a powerful earthquake of 6.8 magnitude this morning, causing buildings to shake and leaving at least one person dead in the nation’s capital.
Three days ago, another earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck Western and Central Mexico, shaking buildings vehemently and leaving at least 2 dead bodies.
The U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday’s earthquake, like Monday’s, was centered in the western state of Michoacan near the Pacific coast. The epicenter was about 29 miles south-southwest of Aguililla, Michoacan, at a depth of about 15 miles.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took to his Twitter to say that it was an aftershock from Monday’s events. The earthquake struck at 1. am on Thursday morning and there were no immediate reports of damage.
Monday’s more powerful quake was the third major earthquake to strike Mexico on Sept. 19 — in 1985, 2017 and now 2022.
The Sept. 19 quakes in 2017 and this year came very shortly after the annual earthquake drill conducted every on that date to commemorate the devastating 1985 temblor that killed some 9,500 people.
Only one death has been confirmed, as the country is yet to report any more damages.
