Britney Spears, American pop diva, is reportedly upset because she was unable to get married in a Catholic church. However, a priest tells CNA that there are four fundamental prerequisites for a Catholic church wedding.

Spears apparently shared a picture of another couple’s wedding inside the St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica, close to Los Angeles, in a since-deleted Instagram post on Wednesday.

“This is where I originally wanted to get married during COVID!!!! I wanted to go every Sunday,” she wrote, commenting on the church’s beauty.

“[T]hey said it was temporarily shut down due to COVID!!!! Then 2 years later when I wanted to get married there they said I had to be catholic and go through TEST!!! Isn’t church supposed to be open to all???”

Later, a church official told TMZ there was no record of Britney Spears asking to get married there. Her tweet was published following the celebration of her marriage to actor Sam Asghari in June.

Father Matthew P. Schneider, LC, a theology professor at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina, responded to Spears’ account by outlining four essential conditions for a wedding to take place in a Catholic church.

Either the bride or the groom must be Catholic and unmarried, among other prerequisites.

Britney Spears declared in a since-deleted Instagram post from 2021 that she is a practicing Catholic and regularly attends Mass. Spears has frequently shared prayers on social media, such as the Hail Mary. She encourages people to “Pray Every Day” on her Instagram bio.

Despite having been raised a Baptist, Spears has a number of practicing Catholic family members, including her mother Lynne Spears, sister Jamie Lynn, nieces Maddie Aldridge and Ivey Joan Watson, and sister Jamie Lynn.
