Veteran British actor Bernard Cribbins, who played in the well-known film adaptation of The Railway Children and narrated The Wombles, has passed away. He was 93.
The revelation was verified to Deadline by Cribbins’ agent, Gavin Barker Associates, in a statement.
“Beloved actor Bernard Cribbins OBE has passed away at the age of 93. His career spanned seven decades with such diverse work ranging from films like The Railway Children and the Carry On series, hit 60’s song Right Said Fred a notorious guest on Fawlty Towers and narrating The Wombles,” the statement read.
“He worked well into his 90s, recently appearing in Doctor Who and the CBeebies series Old Jack’s Boat. He lost his wife of 66 years, Gill, last year.”
Bernard Cribbins, who was born in Oldham on December 29, 1928, appeared in a number of major motion pictures, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy from 1972, in which he played bartender Felix Forsythe. Additionally, Cribbins continued to make frequent cameos on Doctor Who as Wilfred Mott, the popular companion Donna Noble of the Doctor played by Catherine Tate.
Additionally, he frequently appeared in the British soap opera Coronation Street. Cribbins enjoyed success in the music industry away from the cinema, scoring two top-10 successes in 1962 with Hole In The Ground and Right Said Fred.
He received an OBE in 2011 for his contributions to drama.
