The afterword of his contract extension was ‘leaked,’ Mohamed Elneny appears to be on the verge of signing a new Arsenal contract.
After being on the outside of Mikel Arteta’s side this season due to the additions of Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard, it appeared a foregone conclusion that the 29-year-old would leave the Emirates in the summer with his current contract ending. The Egyptian has only appeared in 11 Premier League games, but he has started the last four, all of which have ended in Arsenal victory.
Elneny has proven his worth to the north Londoners by filling in for the injured Party late in the season. Arsenal is in pole position to finish in the top four after victories over Chelsea, Manchester United, West Ham, and Leeds with three games remaining in the season.
As a result, there have been rumors that Elneny could be rewarded with a new contract, and news of an agreement published on social media appears to confirm this.
According to Egyptian sports outlet FilGoal, a member of the Egypt national team personnel tweeted congratulations to the midfielder on his new deal with the Emirates before quickly deleting it.
When asked about Elneny last month, Mikel Arteta was adamant that he is an essential element of the squad, implying that he would be given a new contract.
This isn’t the first time that information about Arsenal’s recruitment has been leaked prematurely to the public. Last month, the Emirates club accidentally disclosed the acquisition of Matt Turner when they sent him a wedding gift on his special day.
The Gunners have signed New England Revolution goalkeeper Tim Howard after finalizing a deal in January, but they have been tight-lipped about an official statement despite Turner and the MLS club confirming the move.
Arteta’s men, on the other hand, gave the game away after the American shared an Instagram story from his wedding, showing a bouquet of red and white flowers and a card that read: ‘Congratulations on your wedding day!’ From everyone at Arsenal FC, best wishes.’
