Most watch Netflix series in 2021, Squid Game has announced the release date of its second season. Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, confirmed a second season of Squid Game will be happening.
The confirmation – which happened during the streaming service’s fourth quarter earnings call on 20 January 2022 – follows Squid Game’s creator, writer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, previously telling the Associated Press on 9 November 2021 that it was definitely on the cards.
“There will indeed be a second season,” he said in a brief interview. “It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.” This means there would be no season 2 in 2022, maybe 2023.
The first season of Squid Game had nine episodes and six “games” within those nine episodes. We’d expect to see a similar amount for the next season.
Dong-hyuk told Radio Times: “I do realise there are huge expectations for season two. It’s not that I haven’t thought about season two at all, and I also do have a rough framework for it. But I keep asking myself whether I can make it better than season one. I do not want people to get disappointed over the new season.”
