Ikeja Electric Band A Compensation: How to Check If You Qualify for Free Electricity Units

Ikeja Electric Band A Compensation: How to Check If You Qualify for Free Electricity Units

If you are an Ikeja Electric Band A customer, there is a good chance you have experienced the frustration of paying a premium electricity tariff while still spending more time than expected on your generator, inverter, or solar system.

Now, there is some good news.

Ikeja Electric has opened its Band A Compensation Portal, allowing eligible Band A customers to check whether they are entitled to compensation for electricity supply shortfalls.

And in some cases, the compensation is being provided as free electricity units.

So, if you are an Ikeja Electric Band A customer, it is worth checking your meter number to see whether you have been credited.

Why is Ikeja Electric compensating Band A customers?

The Band A tariff comes with an important promise: customers on qualifying Band A feeders are expected to receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity supply per day.

That is one of the reasons Band A customers pay a higher electricity tariff.

But during parts of February and March 2026, electricity supply fell below the required service level on some Band A feeders.

The problem was not simply an issue at the distribution level. The electricity sector was dealing with reduced generation, including problems associated with gas supply and damage to critical gas infrastructure.

Nevertheless, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) determined that affected Band A customers should be compensated when the promised service level was not delivered.

This is important because Band A customers are essentially paying for a higher level of service. When that service level is not achieved, there is a mechanism for customers to receive compensation.

What is the Band A compensation?

The compensation is not necessarily a cash refund deposited into your bank account. For eligible Ikeja Electric customers, the compensation is being provided in the form of free electricity units.

This means that instead of receiving money, an eligible customer may receive a number of kilowatt-hour (kWh) units that can be loaded onto the prepaid meter and used as electricity.

A recent check of the Ikeja Electric compensation system reportedly showed 26kWh being issued to an eligible customer on an affected feeder. However, everybody should not assume that they will all get 26kWh.

The amount depends on the customer’s eligibility and the applicable compensation period/service shortfall. And honestly, for anyone buying electricity units regularly, free units are not exactly a bad thing.

How to check your Ikeja Electric Band A compensation

The process is relatively straightforward. Ikeja Electric has created a dedicated Band A Compensation Portal where customers can check their status, and you can check your status and eligibility yourself by using your meter number.

Step 1: Visit the official Ikeja Electric compensation portal

Go to the official Ikeja Electric Band A Compensation Portal:

Ikeja Electric Band A Compensation Portal

Step 2: Enter your meter number

Enter the required meter information into the portal.

Make sure you enter the correct meter number, particularly if you have more than one meter associated with your property or business.

Step 3: Check your eligibility

The portal will determine whether your meter/account is associated with an eligible Band A feeder and compensation period.

If you are not eligible, that does not necessarily mean that something is wrong with your meter.

The compensation is not automatically available to every Ikeja Electric customer.

Step 4: If eligible, check your compensation

If your account qualifies, the portal should display the compensation available to you. For some customers, this may include a number of free kWh and a token that can be loaded onto the prepaid meter. The token is used in much the same way as a normal electricity recharge token.

Is every Band A customer entitled to the free units?

No. This is probably one of the most important things to understand. Being an Ikeja Electric customer does not automatically mean that you will receive compensation.

Even being a Band A customer does not necessarily mean that you will receive the same number of units as another Band A customer. The compensation is linked to specific service shortfalls and eligible feeders/customers.

So, instead of relying on social media posts saying that “Ikeja Electric is giving every Band A customer 26 units,” the best thing to do is to check your meter directly on the official portal.

What if you don’t get any compensation?

Don’t panic if you enter your meter number and it says you are not eligible. The current compensation exercise is tied to qualifying feeders and periods of non-compliance. Not every Band A feeder necessarily qualifies.

Customers have also been advised to check their eligibility through Ikeja Electric’s official channels rather than relying on unofficial websites or people asking for sensitive account information.

If you believe you were a qualifying Band A customer during the affected period but your meter is not showing any compensation, you can contact Ikeja Electric customer service for clarification.

Why this compensation matters to Band A customers

For many Nigerians, electricity is no longer simply a matter of “NEPA brought light.” The compensation reinforces an important principle: a service-based electricity tariff should come with accountability when the promised service level is not delivered. Band A energy users pay heavy rates for electricity, so they should be compensated if their is a shortfall in the service promise.

Band A feeder classification

Another thing customers should understand is that your Band A status is connected to your feeder. Electricity supply performance is therefore not necessarily determined simply by the neighbourhood name.

Two customers living close to each other can have different feeder classifications and different uptime and outage periods.

Ikeja Electric continues to publish information relating to its Band A feeders, so customers should pay attention to the feeder serving their property rather than assuming that everyone in a particular area has the same classification.

Check your compensation

If you are an Ikeja Electric Band A customer, it takes only a few moments to check. Visit the official Ikeja Electric Band A Compensation Portal, enter your meter number, and see whether you qualify. You might discover that Ikeja Electric owes you some free electricity units after all.
