Marseille secured an amazing 1-0 win on Monday against the reigning champion, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), making it their first home victory in 12 matches in Ligue 1.
The game, which was earlier cancelled and postponed because of storm warnings, witnessed Marseille scoring an early goal when defender Nayef Aguerd, a Moroccan international, headed into PSG’s empty net, banking on goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier’s misjudgment of a cross.
The game saw PSG record the highest possession, while their opponent made sharp attacks. Amine Gouiri created two valuable chances in the first half, but one hit the crossbar while the other was cancelled because of offside.
Marseille ensured a strong defence, and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli performed very well in the second half to ensure that PSG did not deny them from walking away with the three points.
Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi received a red card, but that did not stop his team from securing their third straight home victory, which pushed them to sixth on the Ligue 1 table with nine points. It also makes it their straight home clean sheets since December of the last two years.
PSG now sit in the second position, sharing the same points, 12, with Strasbourg, Lyon, and Monaco.
