The head football coach of Oklahoma State, Mike Gundy, was fired by the team’s management due to the poor start to the new season.
This dismissal puts an end to a 20-year tenure in which Gundy was hired as the program’s winningest coach, and he achieved 170 victories in his time with them.
The Cowboys are now 1-2 after they were defeated by Tulsa. This loss marks their consecutive loss to FBS counterparts. The Cowboys ended 3-9 last year, a sharp setback that prevented them from reaching the Big 12 title game in 2023.
The newly sacked coach, who is now 58 years old, has been in charge of the program for 20 years, clinching 18 bowl appearances and three Big 12 Coach of the Year awards. The contract that he negotiated again led the school to owe him a $15 million buyout, down from $25.3 million.
The coach agreed in 2024 that delayed adjustments in compensation of players hurt team depth. He is known for his critical position on the evolving NIL landscape.
Gundy once played as quarterback for OSU, and he had thought that he would be in charge of the team even after next year. Chad Weiberg, an athletic director, referenced the challenges of NIL in announcing the move.
