Minnesota United fell behind their opponent, Club America, which claimed a dramatic win on Saturday’s Leagues Cup match through a penalty shootout at a neutral location, which had American citizens watching after they both recorded a 3-3 draw in their first 90 minutes.
Minnesota United was formerly leading the game 3-2 against Club América with a man advantage after Igor Lichnovsky received a red card in the 62nd minute. Sebastian Caceres of Club America fired into Minnesota United’s post a goal for equalisation in the 90th minute through a fine header that passed Dayne St. Clair.
After the 3-3 90-minute draw by the two sides, the match ended in penalties, as none of them could snatch a win during more than seven minutes of stoppage time, with Luis Malagon, Club America goalkeeper, saving multiple close-range attempts by United.
The two teams scored their first seven shootouts before a miss from Nicholas Romero gave Club America a lead. The victory was later sealed by Isaias Violante’s comeback.
Those who scored the goals for Minnesota United, who never trailed in regulation, include Tani Oluwaseyi, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, and Carlos Harvey. The United now looks forward to its final Phase One game on Wednesday to play at Allianz Field against Atletico de San Luis.
