Beatrice Chebet, a double Olympic medalist, had her 2024 story end on the high side as she won the women’s 5,000m world record at the Cursa dels Nassos road race in Barcelona.

The Olympic medalist ended the race in only 13 minutes and 54 seconds to emerge as the first female athlete to break the 14-minute barrier in the event.

The 24-year-old who, at the Paris Olympics earlier this year, won 5,000m and 10,000m gold beat her previous mark set a year ago to the day in the same race by 19 seconds.

“I’m super happy as everything went according to plan,” she said. “I felt capable of running under 14 minutes, and I managed to do so. Two races in Barcelona and two world records—can I ask for more?

“My focus for next year is to win gold medals over 5,000m and 10,000m at the World Championships in Tokyo.”

The athlete was also alone as she sprinted through the race while she embraced her friends at the finish line after breaking the record and adding an addition to her success.

Chebet recorded many successes in 2024, including breaking the 10,000m world record that was held in Eugene in May, before she received her second Diamond League title in the 5,000m in September.
