Broadway star Sutton Foster filed for divorce from her screenwriter husband, Ted Griffin, on Tuesday after almost ten years of being married.
Foster and Griffin wedded in Santa Barbara, California, in October 2014, a year after getting engaged. After struggling with childbirth for a few years, they welcomed daughter Emily via adoption in spring 2016.
When asked about her adoption journey in an interview in 2021, Foster agreed that it had not been easy. She was always on the fence when it came down to having children.
“I was always very career-driven, and I had such a tricky relationship growing up with my own mom … It was never clear cut for me. I married in my 30s; it didn’t last, but one thing it did give me was this little inkling that I wanted to maybe have a family,” she added.
However, it seemed like a lot had changed since she married Griffin. It was obvious she wanted a family with him.
“When I met my husband, it was the first time that I finally went, ‘Oh, I get it. I understand why people have families,’ ” she wrote in her essay.
According to Sutton, Griffin was the smartest guy she knew and she enjoyed going to the theater with him. She also admitted to making him watch more silly movies.
“I’m trying to bring his intelligence a little bit down,” she joked.
Griffin has not said anything about the divorce proceedings yet. It seems the small family wants to keep their business private while they adjust to their new normal.
