Maryland Governor Wes Moore who had been extremely loyal to President Joe Biden, despite the calls for him to step down thanked the president for his service in the hours after he ended his presidential campaign.
Moore has been tagged to be a future presidential candidate, as he rose in ranks through the Democratic party after he won a competitive Democratic primary for governor two years ago this week.
Moore spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the conversation. On Monday, he endorsed her as as the Democratic Party’s next nominee.
Wes, over his first 18 months in office, also spent considerable time with Biden in Washington.
During his first six months as governor, he visited the White House at least three times.
“I don’t do disloyalty,” he said when asked about Biden during an interview earlier this month with Sun co-owner Armstrong Williams.
Now that Biden has ended his bid, Democrats, including many in Maryland, are rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him.
Some have questioned whether Moore could be a running mate on a Harris-led presidential ticket.
“Certainly he’s on a lot of people’s lists, but I have a feeling what we’re going to see is the need for somebody to pull in a battleground state,” said Roger Hartley, dean of the University of Baltimore’s College of Public Affairs.
The Democrats have such as stronghold in Maryland and the last Republican to take Maryland’s Electoral College votes was George H.W. Bush, in 1988.
