Former President Jimmy Carter is still alive, despite social media claims. A fake letter pronouncing the ninety-nine-month-old former president’s death—complete with typos and jokes—was broadly shared on social media, consisting of Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah. (Lee’s X publication has, for the reason that it has been eliminated.)

The letter, which seemingly comes from the office of Jimmy Carter, starts off plausible. “Former President Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.), a passionate champion of human rights and democracy, WWII veteran, and thirty-ninth president of the USA, passed away Tuesday, July 23, at 01:34 am at his residence in Plains, Georgia, at the age of ninety-nine,” it reads.

But By way of the second paragraph, the letter devolves into satire. It lists “selling the United States out to Panama” and “getting tender at the Soviet Union” as among Carter’s overseas coverage achievements.

The letter goes on to encompass salacious references to Carter’s past due spouse, former first female Rosalynn Carter, and other first girls.

The original July 23 X put-up covered an image description that characterized the letter as fake. “President Carter is still alive and in hospice care. This turned into a test to peer how gullible human beings are to sensationalist headlines,” it examines.

The Carter Center, a nonprofit agency Carter founded, advised PolitiFact that the previous president is still alive.

Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, entered hospice care in February 2023. In June, Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, informed Southern Living there had been “no alternate” in the former president’s circumstance on account that he started out his hospice stay.

At 99 years old, Carter is both the oldest residing former U.S. president and the longest-lived president in U.S. history. We find the claim that he died false.
