St Andrews, Scotland was gripped by a dose of superhero mania this weekend as Tom Holland, the star of the Spider-Man films, made a special appearance at the annual Sands International Film Festival.
The festival kicked off with the premiere of “Last Call,” a short film led by Holland and co-written/directed by his brother Harry. But it was the prospective future of the web-slinging franchise that had fans buzzing as the 26-year-old opened up about whether he’ll reprise his iconic role.
“The simple answer is that I’ll always want to do Spider-Man films,” Holland revealed to Deadline. “I owe my life and career to Spider-Man. So the simple answer is yes. I’ll always want to do more.”
However, the actor emphasized that he and the creative team want to ensure any new installment charts fresh territory after the critically-acclaimed global smash “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
“We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be. But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect,” Tom Holland explained. “This is the first time in this process that I’ve been part of the creative so early…we want to make sure we’re not overdoing the same things.”
The multiverse-hopping “No Way Home” shattered pandemic-era box office records in 2021, grossing over $1.8 billion worldwide. Its success cemented Tom Holland’s status as a bankable leading man after breaking out in projects like “The Impossible” and “Cherry.”
During his annual pilgrimage to Scotland, Holland participated in the festival’s inaugural golf tournament alongside his brother. He’s now turning his sights toward developing new film projects in the post-strike landscape.
“We’re giving the writers the time they need to hit the ground running. But I’ve got a few projects that I’m really excited about and scripts are coming in now and they’re great,” he teased. “I read something the other day that absolutely blew my mind.”
