The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have issued a food recall notice associated with recent Salmonella cases, specifically concerning Infinite Herbs Brand Basil in two-and-a-half-ounce packages.
According to the CDC, this product was distributed in twenty-nine states, including Minnesota and Washington D.C., through Trader Joe’s stores.
Identifying the recalled basil: The basil might have been packaged in clamshell-shaped containers. Trader Joe’s has taken immediate action by removing the product from its shelves and cooperating with the FDA investigation.
The outbreak has affected twelve individuals, including cases in Minnesota, with six states reporting patients requiring medical attention, and one hospitalized.
If you possess the recalled basil, options include returning it to Trader Joe’s or disposing of it safely.
Post-disposal precautions: Ensure thorough cleaning of surfaces, especially countertops, with hot, soapy water to prevent potential cross-contamination.
Recognizing Salmonella symptoms: Watch out for diarrhea accompanied by a fever of 102 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, lasting three days or more, bloody diarrhea, or persistent vomiting leading to dehydration.
Dehydration indicators: Be vigilant for signs like dry mouth or throat, reduced urine output, or dizziness upon standing.
Symptom onset typically occurs within six hours to six days post-exposure, with most individuals recovering within four to seven days.
Vulnerable groups: Children under 5, adults over 65, and individuals with compromised immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness, possibly requiring hospitalization.
Seeking medical attention: If experiencing symptoms, consult a healthcare provider promptly or visit the Emergency Room for appropriate care and guidance.
