Manchester United settled for a solitary point against Burnley on Saturday, as substitute Zeki Amdouni’s late penalty salvaged a 1-1 draw for the relegation-threatened side in the Premier League.
Burnley’s 87th-minute equalizer, courtesy of a penalty earned by Amdouni following a foul by goalkeeper Andre Onana, nullified Antony’s late goal, leaving Erik ten Hag’s squad in sixth place in the league standings.
The draw dealt a blow to United’s aspirations of securing a spot in European competitions, trailing sixth-placed Tottenham Hotspur by six points with two games in hand.
While the draw maintained Burnley’s hopes of survival, they remain in 19th place, just two points behind the safety zone.
United missed several scoring opportunities, relying on Onana to keep Burnley at bay until Antony’s breakthrough in the 79th minute. Celebrating his goal, Antony was handed a Sonic the Hedgehog toy by a fan, which he proudly raised in the air.
However, United’s joy was short-lived as Onana’s late foul on Amdouni resulted in a penalty, duly converted by the latter to secure a valuable point for his team.
Onana showcased his shot-stopping prowess with several remarkable saves throughout the match, denying Burnley’s Lyle Foster twice in the first half and preventing Wilson Odobert’s late attempt with a crucial save at the near post.
United dominated with 27 shots compared to Burnley’s 16, with Alejandro Garnacho posing a significant threat, notably with a second-half strike that forced Arijanet Muric into a fingertip save over the crossbar.
