Celebrations abound for songstress Ashanti and rapper Nelly, who have officially revealed their engagement and forthcoming parenthood.
Breaking the news exclusively to Essence magazine, the duo made waves with a Wednesday social media announcement.
“This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation,” Ashanti, 43, said in a statement to the publication. “Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.”
Ashanti added a playful touch on her verified Instagram, sharing a video as she prepped for a performance. Bantering with her mother and manager Tina Y. Douglas, Ashanti quipped about needing “about nine months,” alluding to their exciting news.
In a statement to CNN, the singer said, “As you know, I am so close with my mom and dad, so I am looking forward to being an amazing parent to our clild, like they were to me and my sister. Nelly and I are so excited to welcome and love on Baby Haynes.” (Nelly’s real name is Cornell Iral Haynes Jr.)
The pair, who confirmed their rekindled romance in September, made headlines twenty years after their initial link-up, which lasted a decade. Ashanti’s appearance at the MTV VMA Awards, where Nelly was a performer, sparked further speculation. Carrying a clutch adorned with a snapshot from their 2003 awards attendance, Ashanti subtly hinted at their revived connection.
During an interview at the event, Ashanti playfully addressed relationship rumors, coyly confirming their status. Nelly also acknowledged their renewed bond during an appearance on “Boss Moves with Rasheeda,” affirming that their reunion took both of them by surprise.
