Tensions flared once more between Rhys Hoskins and the Mets during Saturday afternoon’s second game of the season.
Mets reliever Yohan Ramirez was ejected from the game after throwing a pitch behind Hoskins, who had already collected three hits, including a two-run home run and four RBI. This incident occurred with a runner on first base in the top of the seventh inning.
Hoskins showed visible frustration following the pitch, prompting a reaction from several Brewers players out of the dugout, along with an argument from manager Pat Murphy. Although the Mets did not immediately leave their dugout, manager Carlos Mendoza eventually met with crew chief Alfonso Marquez after Ramirez’s ejection. The crowd at Citi Field responded with a standing ovation for Ramirez.
Despite the tension, Hoskins walked later in the at-bat, maintaining his perfect day at the plate, with the Brewers leading 6-2 in the frame.
This incident followed Friday’s 3-1 Opening Day loss, during which Jeff McNeil and the Mets expressed frustration with Hoskins due to a late slide into second base that made contact with McNeil’s right leg. Although the benches cleared, the umpiring crew ruled the slide legal, as per MLB rules requiring a “bona fide slide.”
