Longest serving Senator Mitch McConnell recently announced that he intended to step down following November’s general election.
He is the longest-serving Republican leader and there have been speculations as to who would replace him.
Here are some potential successors.
- Senator John Thune of South Dakota
Mr Thune is currently the Republican whip, second-in-command to Mr McConnell so he is the most likely candidate.
Some Senate Republicans, particularly those allied with Mr Trump, have made clear they would like a fresh leader. And Trump also endorsed the South Dakota senator in 2022, so anything can happen.
- Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming
As the Republican Conference Chair, Mr Barrasso has an influential position within Senate party leadership. He has also never had problems with Donald Trump.
He may get the support of Trump’s loyal followers if push comes to shove.
- Senator John Cornyn of Texas
The Texas senator is widely considered a strong Senate operator thanks to his 22 years of legislative experience.
He has also avoided certain bills that the Republicans are not proud of. He was not part of the failed border security negotiations.
Sen Joni Ernst of Iowa, who served as the vice-chair of the Republican conference until January, is considered another potential candidate and a reliable backer of Mr Trump.
