At ASU, cricket serves as a platform for students to forge new connections through a sport that holds significance for many due to their upbringing.

For international students, cricket serves as a unifying force, allowing individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together. Graduate student Jeevan Pranav, studying user experience, found solace in this multicultural environment, which fostered a sense of security and camaraderie.

Pranav and sophomore Pavan Venkata Manjunath Mallipudi, a computer science major, commenced their cricket journey at the Polytechnic campus tournament, where they learned the intricacies of the game while emphasizing the value of teamwork.

The Cricket Club extends a warm welcome to newcomers, providing them with an avenue to share the existing players’ passion for the sport and imparting knowledge on cricket’s nuances. Pranav highlights the club’s commitment to acquainting novices with the game’s intricacies, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation.

For Mallipudi, cricket represents more than just a sport; it serves as a platform to cultivate teamwork and hone leadership skills.

The club’s inaugural tournament, held at the Polytechnic campus on Feb. 16, marked a collaborative effort between Cricket at ASU, the International Student and Scholars Center, and the Sun Devil Fitness Center. The event showcased the sport’s universality, attracting participants from all campuses.

Many club members attribute their love for cricket to childhood memories and iconic players who served as role models. Sophomore Viraj Pramod Jadhav, vice president of The Cricket Club at ASU, credits MS Dhoni, an Indian cricket legend, for igniting his passion for the sport and providing a source of inspiration and solace.

Jadhav’s involvement in the club extends beyond the field; he views his role as an opportunity to organize events and leverage networking opportunities. Cricket has not only offered him relief from life’s stresses but has also facilitated professional growth and networking.

Distinct from intramural sports, Cricket at ASU schedules matches on weekends from 3-11 p.m. throughout January to April, accommodating approximately 300 participants. The club’s rotational roster ensures ongoing interaction among teammates, fostering lasting connections and networking opportunities. The culmination of the second-semester matches is slated for April 20, offering participants a chance to celebrate their shared passion for cricket.

“People find it as an opportunity to make new friends and also find jobs and internships because cricket is a big thing in Arizona, not just at ASU,” Jadhav said. “So outside, when people go to play, they’re seniors who are working somewhere, and you can talk to them about internships. So this is a big opportunity to socialize for all the students.”
