Hakim Ziyech found the net in the first half, leading Morocco to a 1-0 victory over Zambia at the Africa Cup of Nations finals on Wednesday. This win secured Morocco’s top position in Group F and ensured the continuation of Ivory Coast’s journey in the tournament.

Despite Morocco’s stand-in captain sustaining an ankle injury and leaving the pitch at halftime, his decisive close-range finish in the 38th minute propelled Morocco to seven points, placing them ahead of the second-placed Democratic Republic of Congo, who drew 0-0 with Tanzania.

Finishing third in the group with two points, Zambia fell short of claiming one of the four last-16 spots designated for the best third-placed teams. Instead, Ivory Coast advanced, prompting celebrations among local fans at the Laurent Pokou Stadium who knew their team would qualify if Zambia lost.

However, Ivory Coast faces a challenging encounter in the round of 16 against holders Senegal, the only team to win all their group games. Adding to the challenge, the Ivorian team will have a new coach, Emerse Fae, following the dismissal of Jean-Louis Gasset on Wednesday.

Morocco’s victory, despite altering much of their lineup and resting key players, was well-deserved. The absence of coach Walid Regragui, banished to the stands due to suspension by the Confederation of African Football just hours before kickoff, did not hinder their success.

Regrettably, Regragui received a four-match ban, two of which were suspended, for his involvement in an on-field altercation with DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba during their previous match. This incident led to scuffles on the pitch and alleged fighting in the stadium tunnel.

Morocco’s triumph included key moments, such as Ziyech’s goal, a strong effort from Ayoub El Kaabi, and opportunities for Ismael Saibari and Nayef Aguerd. Although Zambia had a chance for the draw they needed, Lameck Banda narrowly missed in the 59th minute.

Looking ahead, Morocco is set to face South Africa in San Pedro in the knockout round next Tuesday, while DR Congo will take on Egypt on Sunday.
