Indiana’s Impressive Performance Falls Short in 75-71 Loss to No. 2 Kansas

Despite a strong showing, Indiana couldn’t secure a victory against No. 2 Kansas on Saturday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Leading for over 35 minutes, the Hoosiers ultimately succumbed to a 75-71 defeat as the Jayhawks made crucial plays in the final stretch.

Coach Mike Woodson acknowledged the team’s solid performance but noted a drop in defensive intensity during the second half. The loss, although disappointing, showcased the Hoosiers’ resilience against a top-tier opponent.

The defeat puts Indiana’s overall record at 7-3, lacking a standout win in the nonconference schedule. Unlike previous losses, this game was within reach, with the Hoosiers holding significant leads in both halves.

Kansas secured its first lead with just under five minutes remaining, capping a 16-5 run. Despite efforts to regain control, Indiana fell short, unable to overcome the late-game challenges presented by the Jayhawks.

Senior guard Trey Galloway had a standout performance, achieving a career-high 28 points. Despite his remarkable efforts, including a late three-pointer to cut the lead, Indiana couldn’t seal the deal.

The game highlighted the Hoosiers’ strong first-half play, holding Kansas to 35.3 percent shooting. However, offensive struggles in the second half allowed the Jayhawks to claw back and secure the win.

Coach Woodson expressed satisfaction with the team’s response after a week of practice following previous criticisms. While there are no moral victories, the Hoosiers showcased resilience and potential against a formidable opponent.

Galloway’s impressive showing, coupled with double-digit contributions from Mgbako, Reneau, and Ware, demonstrated Indiana’s offensive capabilities. As the team heads into the remaining nonconference games, they aim to build on the positives and prepare for the upcoming Big Ten schedule in January.
