When Kanye West was going through a rough patch, Julia Fox met him.
Which, in West’s opinion, doesn’t really narrow it down, but in this instance it was the very end of 2021, just over a year after Kim Kardashian filed for divorce following their six-year marriage. Even though West had been observed with several different women in the interim, it soon became clear that he was finding it difficult to accept that Kardashian had moved on with her ex-boyfriend Pete Davidson.
And then came Fox, who had previously gained the most notoriety for her portrayal of Adam Sandler’s mistress in Uncut Gems while enjoying a prominent local reputation in New York as a captivating lady about town.
“Believe it or not, Kanye’s not the most interesting thing that’s ever happened to me,” Fox told the New York Times shortly after their barely month-long but extensively chronicled romance ended in February 2022.
“I feel like I went very lightly on it,” Fox told E! News last month of how much West factors into the narrative. “I’m not trying to have bad blood or anything, it’s all in the past.”
Although she readily acknowledged that he occupies “like six pages,” the paramour who is unmistakably West is merely referred to as “the artist,” so that is more of a matter of style than a deliberate attempt to conceal his identity. (And in reality, it is closer to 16 pages.) Fox has claimed that she changed the names of the majority of the still-living people she addresses in the book since she depicted a lot of terrifying situations.
Consequently, the following is what Fox disclosed in Down the Drain about her hectic month as “the artist’s” top model:
How Julia Fox Really Met Kanye West
In her autobiography Down the Drain, Julia Fox recalls a friend asking her whether he could send Kanye West (referred to solely as “the artist” throughout the book) her phone number a few days after Christmas in 2021.
He invited her to spend New Year’s Eve with him in Miami after spending hours on the phone, she says. She declined his offer to fly her down on a private jet because she already had arrangements, but she agreed if she could bring the friends she was going to spend the evening with.
She didn’t really meet West until the early hours of New Year’s Day since her group wasn’t able to enter the party location until just after midnight, according to Fox, but she remembers feeling an instant connection. She says, “After they talked for a while, he led her outside while he quickly went to the bathroom in a parking lot behind the club, and then he kissed her “passionately.”
Fox recounts that after the after-party, she and her companions left West behind and returned to their hotel.
A Flying Leap to the Next Level
Fox describes waking up later on January 1st, 2022, to find that West had left numerous missed calls and texts. They played UNO for the remainder of New Year’s Day in his hotel suite after she changed into some sweats.
She goes on to say that he asked Fox if she wanted to be his girlfriend that evening over dinner, and she “burst out laughing.” When he asked her how she felt about making their relationship public, she recalled replying, “I think we should wait a few weeks.”
Kanye Orchestrated Their Interview Coverage
There was no reason at the time to believe Fox was not the only author of or to otherwise contribute her own account of meeting Kanye for Interview magazine, which published a dispatch with her byline on January 6, 2022.
But according to Down the Drain, she was unaware that Kanye would send the magazine the pictures from the occasion when he gave her a hotel suite full of clothes.
She claims he requested her to write an article outlining how they met, and she complied. She claims that when she showed him her draft, he rejected it and substituted something that was “completely fabricated”—which West later confirmed to her, was written by a person referred to throughout this section of the book as his “annoying friend.”
They made changes to what they submitted, she claims, but she lists this conversation as one of the warning signs she noticed but chose to ignore since she was so excited to meet West and was hoping for the best.
E! News made an attempt to contact a representative for West to address Fox’s memories of their relationship in her book, but hasn’t received a response.
