Osimhen started for the first time after recovering from a knee injury two weeks ago, having started from the bench in Napoli’s wins against Ajax Amsterdam and Bologna.
The Nigerian international was isolated for a big part of the game, as Napoli could not come forward or create any opportunity toward the post.
Osimhen had scored in Napoli’s 4-2 victory over Ajax as well as the 3-2 defeat of Bologna, but he has dealt with his fair share of injuries.
Osimhen got a shot on in the second half when Piotr Zielinski started a counter-attack after winning the ball on the edge of the Roma box. He then passed to Hirving Lozano who was already on the move, and the Mexican found the Nigerian who could only fire it wide.
The king of Naples scored just 10 minutes stoppage time, as he got on the wrong side of Roma defender Chris Smalling before firing a powerful right-footed shot past Rui Patricio for his fourth league goal of the season.
Only once since 1930 has Napoli ever won 11 consecutive fixtures across all competitions. 2022/2023 is the second time they would be doing that.
Osimhen has now scored his fifth of the campaign in all competitions and fourth in Serie A.
Napoli is already through to the Champions League last 16 after winning all their four matches, but they should battle Rangers on Wednesday for the second leg, and they are hoping to win to at least put a warning that they are a force to reckon with.
The Nigerian would not be playing in the World Cup as he could not lead them to qualify, after drawing with Ghana twice in the qualifiers.
