The way the planet orbits the Sun will help us see its magnificent features tonight. Because of their slightly eccentric orbits, Earth and Jupiter’s distance from one another changes.
A year on Jupiter, or the amount of time it takes to complete one cycle around the Sun, is equivalent to 12 Earth years. The two planets also have quite different orbits.
Jupiter is located roughly 600 million kilometers from Earth at its furthest distant. However, it will only be 367 million miles away from us tonight. Tonight, Jupiter is at a position known as opposition where it is on the other side of Earth from the Sun, making the gas giant appear bigger and brighter than usual.
Adam Kobelski, a research astrophysicist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, claims that with decent binoculars, it will be possible to see the planet’s banding and a number of the Galilean moons. A solid mount for whichever system you pick will be essential, according to Kobelski.
Specific facets of the planet’s surface, such the Great Red Spot, can be seen with a telescope of at least 4 inches in diameter. Jupiter is still visible with the unaided eye, but you won’t be able to see any of its intricacies if you don’t have a telescope or good binoculars.
However, due to its close proximity, its brightness will be more noticeable than usual. Whatever method you use to watch Jupiter, clear skies, high altitudes, and a dark sky will all be helpful. Jupiter and its moons will be particularly visible over the following several nights, even though its closest approach is tonight.
