STDs in the United States are rising at an alarming rate, with cases of HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and the like, at the forefront. Nobody seems to care about practicing safe sex again and drunk random hookups, alongside one-night stands, are usual.
According to CDC reports, 2021 alone recorded about 1.6 million cases of chlamydia reported, nearly 700,000 cases of gonorrhea, over 171,000 cases of syphilis, and 2, cases of syphilis among newborns.
The 26% rise in the cases of syphilis last year was the highest since 1991 and the most number of total cases since 1948. Health authorities have warned Americans to be careful and use protection, as anybody can have syphilis.
Giving a speech at a medical conference on STD’s Monday, Dr. Leandro Mena of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said:
“It is imperative that we … work to rebuild, innovate, and expand (STD) prevention in the U.S.”
The year 2021 also saw a 16% rise in HIV cases and a 25% rise in cases of Gonorrhea since 2017. The United State Health Authorities have declared the situation out of control and are trying to get an emergency solution to the spread of STDs.
They are currently working on various approaches to reduce the spread, including the likes of home-test kits for STDs that will make the process easier for people to get educated on their infection status.
In 2020, cases of syphilis reached upwards of 42,000. Last year, it jumped to over 52,000 cases. Rates are typically highest in gay men, as well as Black, Hispanic and Native Americans.
For women, STDs can be passed onto their babies, which can cause blindness and deafness, and even death in young children. Last year, STDs in women led to about 211 stillbirths.
