After defeating Anthony Smith on Saturday at UFC 277, Magomed Ankalaev now has the second-longest winning streak in UFC light heavyweight history.

Ankalaev (18-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC 277) defeated former title challenger Smith (36-17 MMA, 11-7 UFC 277) via second-round TKO, giving further credence to the idea that he will become a champion in the future. Smith appeared to sustain a serious leg injury during the fight.

In the 205-pound contest, which began the pay-per-view main card and took place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, the Russian used his ground-and-pound strategy to extend his winning streak to nine fights.

Ankalaev and Smith sparred and fought for control of the cage’s middle during the first round.

Both fighters delivered some powerful kicks, and late in the round, a slip put Smith on his back while Ankalaev loomed over him and continued to pelt him with strikes.

After Round 1, Smith hobbled back to his corner and signaled a potential problem. He started off Round 2 with a flurry and a leg kick before shifting gears and attempting a shaky takedown, which was unsuccessful and finally put Ankalaev on top.

The announcer said Smith was compromised at that time, and he retreated while Ankalaev pummeled him to end the fight at the 3:09 mark of Round 2.
