Canadian artist Grimes issued an apology to her fans on Saturday following technical difficulties that marred her Coachella performance earlier that evening, leading her to express frustration by screaming into the microphone.
“I want to apologize for the technical issues with the show tonight,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Usually I always handle every aspect of my show myself – to save time this was one of the first times I’ve outsourced essential things like rekordbox bpm’s and letting someone else organize the tracks on the sd card etc,” she added, referencing the DJ software required to play her music, which blends elements of synthpop and techno.
In social media footage, Claire Boucher, known professionally as Grimes, can be observed venting her frustration, halting songs, and explaining to the audience the challenges of mixing tracks when they are “double the tempo.”
As reported by outlets like Variety, the set was ultimately cut short, with Grimes exiting the stage midway through her popular track “Genesis.”
In her apology, she characterized the experience as “sonic chaos,” admitting to difficulties in discerning how the music was sounding for the audience.
Online reactions varied, with one viral post on X empathizing with Grimes’s ordeal, likening it to a musician’s nightmare, while others criticized her perceived lack of preparation for such a significant festival.
Grimes concluded her apology by pledging to personally organize all files ahead of her upcoming performance at Coachella’s second weekend, noting that there were valuable lessons learned from the incident.
“I will not let such a thing happen again,” she said. “I’ve spent months on this show, making music and visuals, and admittedly am not in the best mood atm. But, yeh – next week will be flawless, everything will run thru my hands.”
