Despite being without injured key players Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, the visitors controlled possession, while Ireland carved out better opportunities. Debutant Sammie Szmodics came close to breaking the deadlock on several occasions.
Interim coach John O’Shea’s side had a prime chance to take the lead when Atletico Madrid midfielder Arthur Vermeeren was penalized for handball in the box. Ferguson stepped up for the penalty but slipped as he struck the ball, allowing Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels to make the save.
Ireland continued to threaten, with Chiedozie Ogbene and Szmodics both going close before halftime. Despite Belgium making tactical changes in the second half, Ireland remained dangerous, with Ferguson and Openda testing the Belgian defense.
Belgium’s preparations for the Euro 2024 finals continue with a match against England at Wembley on Tuesday. In the tournament, they are grouped with Romania, Slovakia, and either Ukraine or Iceland, who will face off in a playoff final next week.
