India’s hopes of advancing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign were dealt a blow as they were held to a goalless draw by Afghanistan in Abha, Saudi Arabia. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Igor Stimac’s side failed to find the back of the net, leaving them in second place in Group A.

The result places added importance on the upcoming return leg against Afghanistan in Guwahati on March 26th and the home tie against Kuwait in June if India aims to progress to the next round.

In a tightly contested match, both teams had their moments, with Afghanistan also posing a threat on the counter. Despite early pressure from the Afghan side, India remained in control for much of the game, with Rahmat Akbari hitting the crossbar for Afghanistan in the 12th minute.

India’s attacking approach, particularly through wing play, created several opportunities, but they struggled to capitalize on them. Manvir Singh and Vikram Partap Singh both missed clear chances, while substitutes Liston Colaco and Brandon Fernandes injected energy into the team in the second half.

Despite late efforts to secure a win, including a close chance from Brandon Fernandes’ corner delivery, India was unable to find the breakthrough, resulting in a frustrating goalless draw.
