Flag Day Celebrations Will Be Held At Legion Posts. See List Of Location, Time & Details

On Flag Day, June 14, American Legion posts across the country will host flag retiring ceremonies. Please share your post on legiontown.org if it is hosting a Flag Day event. In addition, a Flag Day speech is provided for use by Legion posts.

The following American Legion posts will host flag retiring ceremonies on Tuesday, June 14.

Arizona

At 11 a.m., the American Legion Post 32 in Safford will host a flag retiring ceremony.

California

Community members are invited to Stella Van Dyke Johnson American Legion Post 795 at South Lake Tahoe’s Flag Day event, where American flags will be decommissioned. The ceremony will take place at the post, located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe, at 5:30 p.m.

Connecticut

The community is invited to the American Legion Post 20 in Bristol’s Flag Day service, which will take place at 6 p.m. Used and worn flags will be retired by the post.

Illinois

  • On Flag Day, at 4 p.m., at Mills Park in Clay City, the American Legion Post 230 in Olney will hold a flag burning ceremony.
  • From 5-6:30 p.m., the American Legion Post 51 in Danville will hold a flag presentation at St. Mary’s Hall, 231 N. State St. The event is open to the public.

Kansas

At 5:30 p.m., American Legion Post 5 in Emporia will conduct a Flag Day celebration and retiring ceremony at 2921 W 12th Ave. A barbeque, a flag etiquette presentation, and a flag retirement are all part of the festivities.

Unserviceable flags are accepted and encouraged to be brought by the public. There will be new American flags available for purchase.

Maryland

During the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County Flag Day celebrations at 6 p.m., American Legion Post 221 in Leonardtown will lead a flag retiring ceremony.

Minnesota

At 11 a.m., the American Legion Post 290 in Cambridge will hold a Flag Day retiring ceremony. Flags that need to be retired should be brought to the Legion post at 220 South Main Street. The presentation will be followed by a luncheon.

New York

  • At 138 Sterling Street in Watertown, the American Legion Post 61 will perform a Flag Day and retirement ceremony at 6 p.m.
  • At 5 p.m., the American Legion Post 214 in Warwick will hold a flag retirement ceremony at 71 Forester Ave. The Warwick Advertiser quoted Stan Martin, commander of Post 214, as saying, “Other than military members, few in our community have seen a flag retiring ceremony.” “This is a fantastic opportunity for families, Scouts, and other members of the community to participate in a learning experience while also honoring Old Glory.”

Tennessee

  • At 6:30 p.m., the Livingston American Legion Post 4 and Auxiliary Unit 4 will hold a flag retiring ceremony on the Overton County courthouse square. The event is free and accessible to the general public. Those who have a ripped and tattered flag that has to be retired are encouraged to do so.
  • At 6 p.m., near the American Legion Post 44 in Winchester, a flag retirement ceremony will be held near the post at 105 W. Vine St. “We’re doing this because we believe the public needs to know how to properly dispose of an American flag, which is to burn it rather than throwing it away,” Post Commander Ray Cobb told the Herald-Chronicle.

Virginia

The American Legion Post 49 in Smithfield will hold a flag retirement ceremony on June 18 at 1 p.m. at 818 S. Church St. Flags are welcome to be brought to the post and properly disposed of.
