The Yankees and right fielder Aaron Judge will not reach an agreement on a contract extension before the first pitch on Opening Day, according to general manager Brian Cashman, who spoke at a press conference at Yankee Stadium on Friday morning.
Cashman remarked, “Unfortunately, we’ll be in a one-year setting.” “We had a long conversation over the last three weeks, but we were unable to reach an agreement on a one-year contract.”
“Clearly, we want Aaron Judge to be with the New York Yankees as we move forward.” I’m aware of his intentions as well.
The Yankees offered Cashman a seven-year, $213.5 million contract that would have stretched from 2023 through 2029, according to Cashman.
Judge will instead be given a one-year contract via pay arbitration. At some point throughout the season, an arbitrator will determine his 2022 pay. He filed for $21 million, while the Yankees filed for $17 million, and the panel must choose between the two.
Judge stated on Friday that if he had to settle for a one-year contract, he’ll be fine mentally during the season.
