Athletic Club performed excellently in the second half to achieve a comeback that upset Atalanta and stopped their effort to get an automatic qualification for the last 16 of Champions League. Atalanta took the lead in the first half after Gianluca Scamacca headed into the net ahead at the break, a lead that spoke of their early domination. Ernesto Valverde’s boys increased their pressure as the second half began and immediately took possession. Gorka Guruzeta scored to level the goal just before 60 minutes of the match, shifting the momentum decisively. Nico Serrano, who came in as a substitute, fired the shot that put Athletic ahead, before Robert Navarro scored the third goal after beating goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. Atalanta scored a late goal through an assist from Ademola Lookman to fellow substitute Nikola Krstovic for a finish from close range, but the effort wasn't enough to get a point. The win lifted Athletic Club to the 23rd position of the table with only eight points accrued, with a much-needed game to be played against Sporting on the 28th of this month. Atlanta drew back to 13th position after accumulating 13 points and possibly needs an away win against Union Saint-Gilloise to achieve direct qualification.
