Massive protests have erupted in Nepal, forcing key politicians to resign. The rioting started after the people, comprising mainly of the Gen Z youths, started calling out their leaders and their children on social media, who were flaunting wealth while the economy laboured and drowned in hardship brought about by corruption. Why The Government Of Nepal Banned Social Media In The Country The government of Nepal banned almost all social media channels, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), WhatsApp, and even LinkedIn, after they failed to register formally with the country. Nepal had instructed them to get a license in order to operate and have a representative for liaison purposes, but it was not heeded to, except for Viber and TikTok. The government threatened that erring social media channels will be banned after the expiration of a 7-day notice, and made do on the threat at the end, citing reasons to fake accounts, hate speech, misinformation, and cybercrime. The people were against their government's request and feared it would result in the trampling of free speech. All hell was also let loose when the social medias were banned, effectively cutting Nepalese off from communication with relatives and loved ones living abroad, which represents about 7.5% of their 29 million population. Prior to the ban, the youths have been circulating the wanthon display of wealth by the nepo babies, the children of their politicians, while over 20% of the people live in poverty, and many others, struggling to stay above the line. https://twitter.com/SprinterExpres0/status/1965527470024929631?t=18FqS10GZEtpUTCuZ07IHA&s=19 Aftermath of the Ban With no social media to facilitate businesses or at least entertain and distract the jobless youths and students, they all went to the streets in massive numbers to protest. Chanting against corruption, the youths marched to the national parliament and burnt it down. They then attacked and burnt the homes of several politicians - those who were quick enough fled the rampage, while some who were caught up were picked by on rooftops by a helicopter. The Finance minister, Bishnu Prasad Paudel, was not so lucky, as he was caught, beaten up in the streets, and assaulted along a river - all captured on camera. https://twitter.com/dom_lucre/status/1965396238637170842?t=Cz9icHYrg2OBBg83k9yPow&s=19 4th-time Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was also forced to resign after having his house set on fire. Two other ministers have been confirmed to have also tendered their resignations: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and Agriculture Minister Ramnath Adhikari. However, the event did not come without a casualty from the protesters. According to Nepal's health ministry, 25 people have died and 633 others have been injured as of Wednesday. The protest and spate of resignations might bring a positive turnaround for the people of Nepal, who have suffered corruption and poverty, just like Nigeria, which also trended the Nepo and Lapo babies on X, but for a different reason, years after the EndSars and End Bad Governance protests rocked the nation.
