A footage that was gotten through a body-worn camera and released on Friday revealed how officers at the Marcy Correctional Facility in New York were kicking and punching Robert Brooks, an inmate in handcuffs, in a fatal incident that is now under investigation by the New York attorney general.
Robert Brooks, who was 43 years old before he was pronounced dead at Wynn Hospital in Utica on December 10, was serving a 12-year jail term for first-degree assault.
The footage revealed that officers of the correctional center were beating and manhandling him in a medical examination room while his hands were tied behind his back.
The footage also shows how bloodied his face was while an officer dipped an object into his mouth before he started punching him. One of the officers was also shown beating the inmate in the groin using a shoe as a weapon.
The Attorney General of New York, Letitia James, confirmed that four of the correctional officers who were involved in the fatal molestation wore body cameras but forgot to deactivate the audio feature. The inmate was initially transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Marcy a day before the occurrence.
A section of the footage also revealed how Brooks was being carried face down into the correctional facility by three of the officers while the reason for the molestation has not been revealed. An investigation to unravel his death is already ongoing.
