Political assassination in Mexico took a darker turn when Alejandro Arcos Catalán, the recently elected Mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero state, was killed by decapitation, with pictures of the bizarre act flooding the internet.

43-year-old Alejandro Arcos had his head cut off and placed on the roof of a car. His lifeless body was found sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

The Mexican Mayor was murdered just 6 days after he was elected into office. The recent death has made the city of Chilpancingo and Guerrero state itself, rank among the top most dangerous municipality for government officials.

In a statement on X, Guerrero state’s Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda condemned Alejandro’s murder and referred to it as highly provocative, while the state attorney general’s office said the murder was under investigation.

Mexico, known for its high rate of criminality and drug trafficking which finds its way into the United States, is largely under the influence of powerful drug cartels who do all they can to ensure popular politicians that can hinder their business flow do not make it into office or are assassinated soon enough.

Just three days before Alejandro Arcos Catalán’s death, Francisco Tapia, the newly elected secretary of the Chilpancingo city council on October 3 was shot and killed along a sidewalk (video and photos). Months ago, viral videos on social media captured the moment Mayoral candidate Alfredo Cabrera was shot and killed point blank during his final rally before the election.
