White House doctor Confirms Biden Has Only Seen A Neurologist During Annual Physicals, Addressing Parkinson’s Expert Visits

President Joe Biden has not seen a neurologist outside his annual physicals, according to a letter released Monday night by White House physician Kevin O’Connor. The letter addressed visits to the White House by a Parkinson’s disease expert, Dr. Kevin Cannard.

The visits by Dr. Cannard had raised questions that White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had left largely unanswered earlier in the day. Biden has been trying to reassure Americans and Democratic lawmakers that he can still run and win after a poor debate performance last month.

NBC News earlier confirmed reports from the New York Post that a Parkinson’s expert from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center had visited the White House at least eight times in eight months, according to public visitor logs.

O’Connor’s letter detailed Cannard’s background as a neurology specialist and noted that he has been the neurology consultant to the White House Medical Unit since 2012. Cannard examined Biden during each of his annual physicals, including the most recent one in February, O’Connor wrote.

Before the Covid pandemic, Cannard held regular neurology clinics at the White House medical clinic for the thousands of active-duty military members assigned to support White House operations, the letter said.

At a news briefing Monday, Jean-Pierre said that Biden undergoes a comprehensive annual physical evaluation, which includes seeing a neurologist, and that the results have been publicly shared. She did not release names, citing security concerns.

The White House Medical Unit serves thousands of patients and normally does not share the names of physicians it works with, O’Connor wrote in the letter, which was addressed to Jean-Pierre.

O’Connor also noted that Biden had a physical in February and showed no signs of any neurological disorder, including Parkinson’s disease.

On Tuesday, the White House clarified that Biden was seen by Cannard at the White House on Jan. 17, 2024, as part of his physical ahead of his visit to Walter Reed the following month.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed the purpose of the January visit on Tuesday evening after inaccurately saying during the press briefing earlier in the day that the Jan. 17 meeting was not related to the president, in response to a question from The Associated Press.

Questions about Biden’s health have emerged after a poor debate performance that left some people, including Democratic lawmakers, questioning whether he should step aside and allow someone else to run. Biden has resisted those calls, and on Monday he reiterated that he will stay in the race.
