Tobias Harris Adds Veteran Presence And Floor Spacing To Detroit

The Pistons‘ offense struggled significantly throughout the 2023-24 season, largely due to an overreliance on young star Cade Cunningham and the lack of viable scorers around him.

This reliance led to instances of hero ball, poor shot selection from multiple players, and one of the league’s worst three-point shooting percentages. As a result, Detroit finished 27th in offensive rating (109.7), raising more questions than answers.

To address these issues, the team is taking a step forward by bringing back Tobias Harris, who enjoyed some of his most successful individual seasons during his first stint with the Pistons.

Harris will integrate well with a completely revamped roster compared to his previous time in Detroit. He is expected to join the starting lineup, complementing the development of fellow forwards Ausar Thompson and fifth-overall pick Ron Holland.

The short length of Harris’ deal also provides flexibility, making it a moveable asset if the team struggles to improve.

Adding experienced NBA players like Harris and Tim Hardaway Jr. strengthens the Pistons by reducing their reliance on inexperienced players. Many from Detroit’s 2023-24 roster will either play elsewhere next season or be out of the league entirely as the team attempts to regain relevance.

With a couple of solid moves already made and over $20 million in cap space remaining, it seems unlikely that the Pistons are done making changes. In a somewhat weak free agency class, Harris could emerge as Detroit’s most significant signing this offseason.
