The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has named Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in the recent shooting incident targeting former President Donald Trump. The attack, which occurred during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulted in one fatality and two injuries among the audience members.
According to FBI Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek, Crooks allegedly opened fire on the former president using a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle. The assailant was subsequently neutralized by a Secret Service sniper at the scene. Rojek stated, “We do not currently have an identified motive,” adding that the investigation into the incident could span several months.
The FBI reported that Crooks was not carrying identification at the time of the attack. In order to confirm his identity, investigators had to employ DNA analysis and facial recognition technology.
The suspect’s background reveals a complex picture. Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 2022 graduate of Bethel Park High School, received academic recognition for his performance in mathematics and science. He was employed at a local nursing home and was registered as a Republican voter.
Law enforcement sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, informed the Associated Press that the weapon used in the attack may have been purchased by Crooks’ father at least six months prior to the incident. The suspect was also reportedly wearing apparel associated with a popular YouTube channel known for firearms-related content.
The shooting has shocked the small suburb of Bethel Park, where Crooks resided with his parents. Local authorities have cordoned off the area surrounding the family home as part of an ongoing investigation, which includes examining suspicious devices found in the suspect’s vehicle.
Former classmates and community members have expressed disbelief at the news. Summer Barkley, who attended school with Thomas Matthew Crooks, described him as “always nice” and “very passionate about history.” Others remembered him as a quiet individual who did not stand out in particular.
The incident has left one person dead and two others injured. During a press briefing, Governor Josh Shapiro identified the deceased as Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old volunteer fire chief who lost his life while protecting his family. Shapiro lauded Comperatore’s actions, stating he “died a hero.”
Former President Trump, who sustained a minor injury to his ear during the attack, is reported to be “doing well” according to a statement from the Republican National Committee. The investigation into the motive behind this shocking act is still ongoing.
