Kendrick Lamar Releases ‘Not Like Us’ Music Video Amidst Drake Conflict

Kendrick Lamar concluded his months-long feud with Drake by unveiling a music video for his hit song “Not Like Us,” which directly targeted the Canadian rapper.

The video premiered on Independence Day, following Lamar’s performance of “Not Like Us” six times at his Juneteenth concert titled “The Pop Out.” Many fans interpreted these actions as Lamar’s pointed responses to Drake, accusing him of appropriating Black American culture in his diss tracks.

Since its release, the “Not Like Us” music video has garnered over 13 million views as of Friday morning.

Online, fans widely praised the video, viewing it as a celebration of Compton, California—Lamar’s hometown—and the West Coast music scene. Some fans particularly enjoyed Lamar’s continued criticisms of Drake.

Several references to Drake are apparent in the video, including an owl piñata and a live owl in a cage. The owl serves as a mascot for Drake’s label October’s Very Own (OVO). During the piñata scene, the video humorously flashes a disclaimer: “No Ovhoes were harmed during the making of this video.”

Additionally, the video includes nods to Toronto, Drake’s hometown. Producer Mustard, who crafted the beat for “Not Like Us,” appears in the video wearing a Toronto Blue Jays hat. NBA player DeMar DeRozan, originally from Compton but formerly with the Toronto Raptors, also makes a cameo. Lamar references DeRozan in “Not Like Us,” suggesting Toronto didn’t appreciate him: “I’m glad DeRoz’ came home/Y’all didn’t deserve him neither.”

Lamar also appears to mock claims made against him in Drake’s diss tracks. In one scene, he is seen doing pushups on cinder blocks—a possible reference to Drake’s diss track “Push Ups.” The video also features Lamar’s fiancée, Whitney Alford, and their children, challenging Drake’s assertions of estrangement.

The feud between the two rappers escalated earlier this year, with fans supporting their respective artists. Lamar’s widespread popularity with “Not Like Us” has led many to declare him the victor in this lyrical battle. Some even consider Lamar’s Juneteenth concert as his triumphant celebration in the ongoing feud.

Moreover, Lamar teased an unreleased track at the beginning of the “Not Like Us” video, sparking speculation among fans about a potential upcoming project from the rapper.
