Novak Djokovic Withdraws From French Open Quarterfinals Due To Meniscus Injury

Novak Djokovic’s participation in the French Open quarterfinals has been halted following an MRI on Tuesday, which confirmed a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Scheduled to confront Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, the absence of world No. 1 opens the door for Jannik Sinner to potentially become the first-ever Italian man to ascend to world No. 1 when the new rankings are released on Monday.

“Due to a torn medial meniscus in his right knee (discovered during an MRI scan performed today), Novak Djokovic, who was supposed to play Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals tomorrow, has been forced to withdraw from the Roland-Garros tournament” the French Open released in a statement.

Djokovic, who arrived at the tournament with slight knee discomfort, expressed that the injury exacerbated during his five-set victory over Francisco Cerundolo, particularly in the second set. The Serbian voiced frustration over the slippery condition of Court Philippe-Chatrier, requesting more frequent surface sweeping, yet the appeal was denied.

Throughout the year, the three-time French Open champion has navigated through a series of challenges, including injuries, coaching alterations, and uncharacteristic defeats.

In 2023, Djokovic was virtually unstoppable, clinching three out of four Grand Slams and reaching the Wimbledon final. He boasted an impressive 56-7 win-loss record, marking an 88.9% win rate. Conversely, in 2024, his season record stands at 18-6, reflecting a 75% win rate.

At 37 years old, the tennis star was aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title but continues to hold the record for the most majors on the men’s circuit.
