Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, is set to make a splash in a different role at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games. NBC announced on Friday that Phelps will be joining their broadcast team for swimming coverage, marking his return to the commentary booth after his debut at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

The 38-year-old swimming legend will be a prominent figure across NBC’s Olympic programming, appearing on both daytime and primetime shows on NBC and Peacock. In addition to his studio duties, Phelps will lend his expertise alongside veteran commentators Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines for select swimming events at París La Défense Arena.

Molly Solomon, NBC Olympics Production’s executive producer and president, expressed excitement about Phelps’ return, highlighting his unparalleled knowledge of winning at the pool. Phelps’ inclusion is seen as a strategic move by NBC, capitalizing on his status as a viewership magnet and his deep connection with Olympic audiences.

During his illustrious career, Michael Phelps competed in five Olympic Games, amassing an astounding 28 medals, including 23 golds. His eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics remain a record for a single Games. This wealth of experience is expected to translate into insightful commentary and analysis for viewers.

Michael Phelps has already shown his ability to provide engaging content, as evidenced by his recent appearance on NBC’s broadcast of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials. His passionate response to comments about the USA-Australia swimming rivalry demonstrated that he still carries the competitive fire that made him a champion.

The Paris Olympics will be running from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
