Cat Owners Who Fail To Microchip Could Face £500 Fines

Starting Monday, all cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a database under new legislation. This law applies to all cats aged 20 weeks and older, including indoor cats.

According to the RSPCA, despite the impending law change, one in 10 cats entering their centres are still not microchipped. Pet owners who fail to comply with the new rules face a £500 fine if they do not microchip their cats within 21 days.

A survey by Cats Protection indicated that approximately 1.9 million cats in England are not microchipped, and about 300,000 cat owners are unsure if their cats are microchipped or not.

Microchipping is a simple procedure where a small chip is inserted under the animal’s skin, providing the pet with a unique code. This chip can be scanned and matched to the owner’s contact details stored in a database.

Currently, microchipping cats is not a legal requirement in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. The RSPCA believes the new rules in England will enhance cat welfare, assist in locating missing pets, and reduce the abandonment of animals. Last year, the charity reported over 7,500 abandoned cats, with more than 1,500 cases reported so far this year.

Microchipping can be done by a vet or at a local rescue and rehoming centre, typically costing between £20 and £30. It is the owner’s responsibility to update the database if they move or if their contact details change.

Cats Protection’s recent research shows that some cat owners who have not microchipped their pets believe it is unnecessary because their cats either do not go outside or do not wander far.
