California’s Corral Fire Sparks Concern Among Firefighters As Climate Change Intensifies Fire Risks

Over the weekend, the Corral Fire erupted in Northern California, rapidly spreading across more than 14,000 acres. It crossed major roadways and forced evacuations as it threatened nearby homes.

Local resident Daniel Perez chose to stay behind to assist first responders.

Despite his best efforts, the house of his neighbors was destroyed by a fire caused by strong winds. Fortunately, the older couple living there managed to evacuate safely. Perez’s home survived, but his garage, filled with cherished memories, did not. One item he had utilized in his daughter’s crib was a grandmother-made comforter that was lost.

Although wildfires are not unusual in California, firefighters are concerned about the Corral Fire because it started early in the fire season and was approximately 75% contained as of Monday night.

According to scientists, rising temperatures are causing spring to arrive earlier, resulting in quicker snowpack melting. This dries out vegetation, turning it into fuel for fires.
