27-Year-Old Man Murdered At Akron Street Party Identified

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 27-year-old man killed during a street party shooting in Akron on Sunday morning. The victim has been identified as Lateris Cook of Akron.

The shooting incident also left 26 others injured, with two currently in critical condition. Cook’s stepmother, Kalandra Snow, shared that Cook had four children and another baby on the way, and the family is in disbelief over his tragic death.

Snow mentioned that Cook attended the street birthday party just to have fun. In a news release on Monday, Akron police stated that they are working tirelessly, sifting through evidence and conducting neighborhood canvasses in their efforts to solve the shooting case.

Snow is urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.

Around 10 p.m., police responded to a private residence where a birthday party was taking place. Approximately 200 attendees were present, being loud and shooting fireworks. The police asked them to disperse from the street due to motor vehicle traffic.

Between 10 p.m. and midnight, people returned to the party. Shortly after midnight, police began receiving calls about shots fired.

At the scene, police discovered two handguns and multiple types of shell casings, including those from a rifle.

City, police, and fire officials provided an update on the shooting Sunday night. During the news conference, Akron city officials reported that 24 people were shot and one person was killed in the overnight incident.

Police identified at least 35 shell casings at the scene, which aligns with observations made by a News 5 journalist shortly after the shooting.

Akron police are still processing evidence at the scene and have not determined the number of shooters or identified any suspects. No arrests have been made.
