None of the individuals wounded in a shootout at a Florida restaurant over the weekend, which included Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell, sustained life-threatening injuries, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday during a gathering at the Cabana Live restaurant in Sanford, situated north of Orlando. Sheriff Dennis Lemma stated on Monday that more than 200 individuals were present at the venue when a 16-year-old initiated gunfire following an altercation. Shortly after, another unidentified male also discharged their firearm.
Lemma emphasized that the situation could have escalated further if it weren’t for an unnamed security guard who intervened by apprehending the 16-year-old shooter. Dell, hailing from the nearby Daytona Beach area, found himself caught in the crossfire, according to Lemma. He sustained a “minor wound” and was discharged from the hospital later that Sunday, as per the Texans. The sheriff did not provide specifics about Dell’s injury.
Authorities expressed the intention to interview the unidentified gunman, suggesting that their actions might fall within the purview of Florida’s self-defense statutes.
According to an arrest report, there is probable cause to pursue charges against the teen, including attempted homicide, discharging a firearm on public property, unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor, and using a firearm during the commission of a felony. However, final decisions on charges will rest with local prosecutors, Lemma clarified.
