Birley Academy school, Sheffield, was closed for the day and a teenager was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, following an attack on a child and two women in their twenties.
Reports of three individuals sustaining injuries prompted the detention of the 17-year-old assailant at Birley Academy, previously known as Birley Community College, on Wednesday morning.
In response to the incident, the school initiated a temporary lockdown before ultimately deciding to close its doors.
Elizabeth Askham, whose daughter is a student at the academy, recounted her daughter’s communication as the situation unfolded.
South Yorkshire Police responded to reports of a disturbance involving a “sharp object” at the school located on Birley Lane around 8:50 am.
In an official statement delivered outside the school premises, Assistant Chief Constable Dan Thorpe disclosed that one of the adult victims suffered injuries attributed to “broken glass,” whereas the assaulted child fortunately exhibited no apparent physical harm.
Thorpe acknowledged the alarming nature of the event, commending the school staff for their prompt actions in safeguarding the school community.
Furthermore, he cautioned against speculative discourse surrounding the incident, urging the community to exercise restraint and refrain from conjecture.
